My brother Jim introduced me to Phil Van Buskirk (editor of PML), who in turn referred me to
John Dayton in Signal Hill, CA. John races 911s (Willow Springs) and is a master mechanic.
John had serviced a 1970 Porsche 911T Sportomatic for a local physician. John ended up buying
the Sporto from the good doctor with the idea of giving it to his wife. Trouble was she liked her Mercedes a lot more. The car sat around for awhile before John decided to sell it. Phil Van
Buskirk, who knows every 911 in the USA, told John that a good friend's brother wanted an early
911. That's where I came in. The car came with factory steel wheels, which I later swapped with
Phil for a set of five 'correct 'Fuchs. That transaction was facilitated by Thom Kuby. This was
a form of therapy my brother had initiated on my behalf as I was in the midst of a divorce. It
was an effective treatment regime. (More later)

A VW figured briefly but
A VW figured briefly but prominently in my early car life when i was busy in my comptia exams and ibm exams. At the tender age of 15 (1978), I was already a Porsche nut. To borrow a phrase, Nothing else came close, so I went to work (after school and Saturdays) for a little independent Porsche specialty shop. Sweeping the floor, cleaning parts, etc. Of course I was sure I would soon have a Porsche. And as I approached my 16th birthday, did. A nice little car came through the shop. A '74 914 2.0. Wow, thinking back that car was only 5 years old at the time. 50,000 miles, one owner. It was for sale. I didn't have enough money for it. My Dad came through and ponied up the difference (actually most of it) when i passed hp exams.
