Produced from 1968 to around sometime in 1980, the Sportomatic transmission was based on two gearbox models, Type 905 and 925. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, the system can be described as a 'clutchless manual' gearbox.
When a driver shifts in a Sportomatic car, a microswitch on the gearstick operates a control valve which controls the vacuum to a diaphragm that operates the clutch release bearing. Like a conventional automatic transmission a torque converter is employed with a high stall speed. However, the converter is operated by engine oil rather than ATF in conventional transmissions.
