Sheehan's '70 911T
I
was beginning to feel I was in a world of my own with my car. I have only owned
it for a couple of months now. I bought the car from its second owner in Napa.
The car was originally purchased at Carlson Porsche in 1969 (I even have the
original bill of sale). The car is a 70' 911T has about 118,000 original miles
on it. Mechanically it is pretty sound although it could use some paint. Here
are some pictures of it:
I
grew up around Porsches in Florida. My father owned 2 when I was a kid and I
made many a trip to the 12 hrs of Sebring and 24 hrs of Daytona. A big thrill
for me was meeting one of the Brumo's drivers Peter Gregg one year at Sebring
and sitting in his 911. My dad's Porsche's were a 924 and a 944 although he
always wanted a 911. I drove in many with him but my mother would never let him
buy one with two small children so he settled for the 924 and 944. With my
father now deceased I decided that it would only be fitting that his son would
own the car he always wanted. So I went and bought a 911 that is as old as me (a
little less then 2 months to be exact from the date built November 24, 2969).
I
do as much of the maintenance work myself as I can oil changes, minor electrical
etc.. The sportomatic
transmission is the best of all worlds for me. I live at the top of telegraph
hill and it makes the hills a breeze. I drove several manual transmission 911's
before I decided on this one and none could compare. A sporto is a must in the
city. Parallel parking and those dreaded stops on the hills that I used to have
major problems with in my previous car (a 4 speed BMW 2002) are a breeze. It
definitely takes some getting used to especially for a person like me who has
only owned manual transmissions. I used to keep my hand on the shifter when
going between 1st and second gear (a big no no with the sporto). Now that I know
how to drive it properly I wouldn't trade it for the world. Skeptics are
plentiful as nearly everyone I have talked to has tried to convince me to change
out the transmission. However, I will keep my sporto in tact as long as I can.
